Sri Jagannath Puri, is one of the divine chardhams, that elevates living beings spiritually. Just like Badrinath is the Lord of Satha Yuga, Ramnath is the Lord of Treta Yuga and Dwarakanath is the Lord of Dwapara Yuga similarly Jagannath is the Lord of Kali Yuga, who is delivering the conditioned souls from the ocean of miseries.
When Lord Brahma started creating the universe as per Maha Vishnu’s instructions, he got disturbed and felt deep pain, because he knew the living entities are bound to suffer in this material world, which he will be creating. Being compassionate upon the living entities, he started meditating upon Lord Vishnu.
When Lord Vishnu appeared, Lord Brahma humbly asked “My Lord please tell me, is there any way by which the living entities I’m creating would be delivered from this world?”
Lord Vishnu smiled and replied “Towards the North of the ocean and South of Mahanadi there is the all auspicious Purushottam kshetra situated. There, in the Neelakandar of Neelachal mountain; I reside as NeelaMadhav along with Goddess Lakshmi. Just by having the darshan of this NeelaMadhav form of Mine, there would be no rebirth for the living entities. However I would remain as NeelaMadhav for 50 years of your lifespan and for the rest 50 years I would be present as Jagannath. King Indradyumna would be playing an important role in Jagannath’s manifestation and you would also help king Indradyumna in his endeavor.”
Pleased with this answer, Lord Brahma bowed down and went ahead to continue his creational activities.
